My grandfather, Smerconish, and me.

Gino Guarnere and Wild Bill Guarnere, Thanksgiving Day, 2007

Gino and Wild Bill

On October 3rd, 2007, my grandfather and Babe Heffron went on the Michael Smerconish show to promote their new book. The interview was typical of one featuring my grandfather: lively, no regard for the FCC, and a tell-it-like-it-is approach. Smerconish loves Wild Bill and has him on the show quite a bit.

On this particular morning, I was driving into work while listening, and I decided to call in. I happened to have Michael’s producer’s phone number programmed into my cell, and I was able to get right through. She graciously gave me the phone number to dial and I was immediately placed into the caller queue. Michael put me through a few calls in, and it was a hoot to speak to him via my cell phone while driving into work. The interview is great, and I’m posting this because my grandfather is awesome. I’m simply another one of his admirers.

Enjoy!

  1. That’s very cool, Gino. One of the members on WBG published a link to the radio station’s site and we were able to download and listen to it back then. Did you by any chance ever record the more recent visit to the show by Bill and Babe?

Bill and Babe certainly are two of a kind! BK

  2. Hey BK,

I didn’t get a chance to grab the newest show, but Mr. Smerconish usually puts shows out there within a week or less of when they actually occurred. I’ll poke around for that one and make it available if and when he posts it. Thanks for visiting!

  3. I was a teacher at Cardinal O’Hara High School when your grandfather gave a talk to Bill Donohue’s Socisal Studies. I did not find out about it until the next day. I asked Bill Donohue to have him back and he agreed but it did not happen. I asked another teacher to have him back and she agreed but that also did not happen I was at Mount Laurel N. J. last Sunday and gave Bill and Babe each a bottle of Jamison’s Irish whiskey. I thiought that it would keep them warm on a clold night like one at Bastogne. Like many other people who admire Bill, Babe and all the other heroes of Easy Co. I am very thankful for their many sacrifices. I jusy listened to rhe recording of their appearance on Michael Smerkonish’s radio show. Why don’t they , Bill and Babe, appear at different places and give talks about their experiences and have a question and answer session. They are national treasures and they should be heard before it is too late. People would gladly pay to hear thease two heroes in person. And please have them appear in as many high schools as possible so that these kids know what prices were paid so that they have the freedom that they have today.
Oh yea! I asked that my book be addressed “To Franny”. Bill said to me that thhat was his wifes name. I knew that from reading the book. Please consider these suggestions and if your grandfather ever goes to O’hara again please let me know. I retired in 2005 but I go back at least 4 times a year.

    God bless Easy Co.
